Creating
Nicci
This is a piece that I did for my college course. The brief
was to create a portrait of a horse with reigns and bridle.
I chose to do this piece in oils on mountboard.
The original image is by a friend of mine who is a great
photographer - Claire Hirst. |
Step 1 Outline
I used the grid method to transfer the outline from the
original image to the mountboard. The original is around
6 x 8 and the finished painting is just over A3 size.
Despite this shot, the grid is square and straight on the
page! My camera work and cropping, on the other hand, are
not ;0)

Step
2 Sealing the board and the image
A this stage it's a good idea to seal the board, and the
outline, with a very weak coat of acrylic. It doesn't matter
about the grid or the outline as this will gradually become
obscured with the oil paint. |
Step 3 Scrubbing in basic colour
Now it's time to get some basic colour in there so that
I have a base coat to work with.

Step
4 Adding darks and lights
Dark and light areas are gradually built up over the base
colour using glazes to add depth to the painting. |
|
Step6
Adding the detail
Once I'm happy with the general colour and foundation of
the painting, I start to add more depth to the shadows and
highlights. |

Step6 Adding the detail
Finally the finished piece! |
